A natural paradise
The “Coast of the Light” is the western part of the Andalusia coastline that faces out to the Atlantic Ocean. The sand is finer and a of a more golden colour than the neighbouring Costa del Sol.
The typical beaches here are more expansive with large dunes and have been left unspoiled by mass tourism. The temperatures are slightly milder but the Atlantic winds can be strong. The stretches of cliffs and coves are generally found near Barbate and around Gibraltar.
It does not only have some of Europe's best beaches but also a wealth of history, culture and scenery. Moorish towns and villages look towards Africa whilst the great cities of Cadiz and Jerez provide fascinating places to visit, with their melting pot of cultures and rich traditions.
Zahara de los Atunes is a small fishing village with about 1.500 inhabitants situated in the province of Cádiz, 12 km south-east of Barbate and 40 km north-west of Tarifa on the Atlantic coast.
It has a pleasant atmosphere, and is a very popular tourist resort of the province. On a quiet day, it is like going back in time. There are 8 km of white sandy beaches stretching far away and the area has remained unspoiled.
This is a perfect place for combining exploration with seaside relaxation, with wonderful seafood restaurants where you can try the typical gastronomy from this part of Spain. You can also enjoy the sunset, the peacefulness and the stillness.
In the village itself there are the ruins of the “Castillo de las Amadrabas” built in the 15th century for protection against pirates and later used by local fishermen to store their tuna fishing equipment. Zahara’s summer festival takes place at beginning of August each year.
¿How to arrive?
If you go by plane the closest airports are Gibraltar (65 km) and Jerez de la Frontera (80 km). You can also travel to Malaga (195 km.) or Seville (192 km.) You will need a car to get there.
